What is

The word Yoga means “union” — the union of the individual self with the universal consciousness. The foundation of Yoga is laid out in the ancient texts such as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras describe the eight-fold path, or Ashtanga Yoga, which includes Yama (moral restraints), Niyama (personal observances), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breath regulation/Channelisation), Pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi.
